Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Publishing Date: February 2, 2021

Orphaned and forced to serve her country’s ruling group of scribes, Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, long ago shipped away. But family bonds don’t matter to the Scriptorium, whose sole focus is unlocking the magic of an ancient automaton army.

In her search for her brother, Karis does the seemingly impossible—she awakens a hidden automaton. Intelligent, with a conscience of his own, Alix has no idea why he was made. Or why his father—their nation’s greatest traitor—once tried to destroy the automatons.

Suddenly, the Scriptorium isn’t just trying to control Karis; it’s hunting her. Together with Alix, Karis must find her brother…and the secret that’s held her country in its power for centuries.

This Golden Flame is a sweet fantasy story about the love of family and friendships that stand the test of wrong decisions, betrayal, and altogether bad attitudes. Dane and Karis were bestfriends Automatons are something I have not read a lot about, and I feel like this was done very well. The plot was decent, characters were likeable and relatable, villain was villainous … I do wish there had been a little more details throughout. Over all I do recommend this book. It was an easy standalone (I am pretty sure lol) read that I very much enjoyed.

Favorite Quotes:

1. “You’re as close to family, as I have, Karis,” he says quietly. “Don’t ask me to watch you ruin yourself.”

– Dane to Karis

2. “There’s that anger. Funny how we use it to cloak what we’re most scared of.”

I gape at her. “Oh yes? And what would I be scared of?

She steps closer to me., so close I want to back away from the intense look in her eyes. I hold my ground.

– Zara & Karis

3. “You’re more than those ruins in your skin. All my crew are, and being made of metal doesn’t change that. Don’t ever let them define you on their terms. This is your life to live.”

– Zara to Alix
